2nd INTERNATIONAL GARDENING CONTEST
BILBAOJARDÍN 2009
PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST
The purpose of the second edition of BilbaoJardín 2009 is to create 27 new spaces in our city, 27 personal and creative conceptions of modern gardening.
These 27 spaces have been carefully selected in order to form a creative mesh within the city, allowing locals and visitors alike to enjoy a very special stroll throughout the different quarters of Bilbao and marvel at the garden projects participating in the contest.
BilbaoJardín 2009 aim is to continue on its invitation to the development of creative gardeners, landscape artists, architects and other creative people wishing to participate. The contest has no theme, so contestants are free to choose their own topics.
Also, the organizers will value those proposals based on living matter, that is, on vegetation, as the main element of their creations, since it is precisely this use of botanical elements (trees, bushes, ivy, perennial plants, flowers, water plants, succulent plants) that we wish to particularly disseminate.
The contest is open to all those individuals or teams interested in participating.
GENERAL RULES
Contestants must set up their Projects on a surface of approximately 80, surrounded by ecological sleepers supporting a vegetal bedding approximately 45 cm high. The enclosing and containment of the vegetal bedding is subject to alternative proposals, in which case it will be up to the organizers to decide whether they will take care of the enclosure or leave it to the contestants.
As to the shape of the 80m2 project, it is free, but contestants must be aware that the shaping of their projects may be slightly altered depending on the project location selected.
The organizers will select 27 projects, which will go on to the final stage of the contest. The projects will be assigned their corresponding spaces, which can be both urban spaces and already existing green areas.
The winner garden by popular election in 2007 as well as second and third classified by 2007 jury’s election, will have the right to be selected if this is their wish.
The Bilbao City Hall and its Department of Parks and Gardens will provide the contestants with the enclosing perimeter for the creative space and the vegetal bedding.
The Contest will fund the 27 projects selected with 6,000 euros each.
Contestants may be assisted by suppliers, artists or professionals specific to their projects, who will be credited in the project. Nevertheless, to all contest effects, the contestant will be the only valid interlocutor.
The 27 projects selected will be exhibited in different strategically selected locations.
The Jury will select the winner of the contest and two additional prizes on the basis of his/her compliance with the technical conditions and the evaluation criteria established.
PROJECT EVALUATION CRITERIA
Creativity and creative daring will be especially valued in the Projects, as well as the use of new technologies.
Designers will try to use plants little used or neglected, but very powerful during the season of exhibit.
The Jury will be appreciative towards vegetal innovations, but classic plants may also be used.
It will also value those designers using original colour palettes and well-matched hues, resulting in very flowery gardens.
The Jury will take into account the life span of the vegetal compositions during the exhibition period.
Trees and bushes in large containers, perennial plants (grown in annuals) and annual plants (bearing in mind that trees and bushes transplanted with root ball yield very bad results in certain seasons) will be preferred.
The budget-effect relationships will be taken into consideration.
